Ocean Pollution
Have you ever watched SpongeBob? Could you imagine SpongeBob walking around and not being able to see where he was going because there was trash in his way or oil making the water black? Being a sponge, he would soak it all up and it would probably make him sick! He would suffer because someone outside the ocean, let's say Sandy the squirrel, put something in the ocean not even thinking about it. She may have just finished eating her food and threw the trash or the particles from her nut into the ocean. This happens, maybe not to SpongeBob, but to the fish and pretty creatures living in our oceans today. SpongeBob lives in a clean world and we want this for all the fish! We want them to be happy and to enjoy their lives without worrying about what might be thrown into the ocean. Ocean pollution is a big problem in the world today and it is causing fish and other pretty creatures, such as Patrick Star, to suffer. When we are at the beach or on the ocean in a boat, it isn't good to throw our trash into the water to get rid of it. It doesn't just disappear. It will stay in the ocean and eventually collect with some other objects people have thrown in and create an island. This isn't the tropical island your parents may talk about when they discuss vacation, but rather it is known as a dead zone. It is a zone in the ocean that causes an unhealthy environment for certain, if not all, organisms to live. It is a result of people thinking their small banana peel in a large ocean or their one water bottle won't affect anything. In reality, all the small things come together to create one huge, floating piece of plastic. It is an ongoing problem and has flown over people's heads for quite some time.
What if SpongeBob was soaking in oil? He'd be dirty all the time and it would be tough for him to absorb the right amount of water to survive. This is what happens to the animals in the ocean. There are oil spills into the ocean and they breathe in the oil when trying to breathe in the water. They can't always get away from it so they end up slowly dying from it. If the spill is small enough it may not even discolor the water making it tough for the creatures in the ocean to even realize something is wrong. Once the oil enters the water, it spreads faster than on land. It is like spilling your drink. When the liquid spills onto the table, it spreads wider and faster than you would think. This is another problem overlooked by many and needs to be attended to.
Polluting the ocean is something people do and don't even know they are doing it. They throw their stuff on the ground and it gets washed away or the string falls off their fishing rod. Like I said before, just think of SpongeBob. Would you want to watch SpongeBob if he was living in a black sea because oil spilled? I wouldn't. Just be aware of what you are doing and he will remain happy underneath the deep blue sea.
